“ASHAMED? Scripture Has Always Messiah's Emancipation Delivered! (A.S.H.A.M.E.D)

By Ramesh C.Reddy
Pittsburgh Standard

June 19, 2009

Editors Note: The devotional has a background song  which can be heard if you use Internet Explorer.

SCRIPTURE:
"What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ASHAMED of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ASHAMED of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." (Mark 8:36-38, NIV)

OBSERVATION:
I asked myself what is the IF-THEN statement I see in v. 38?
IF anyone is (ASHAMED of me and my words) in this (adulterous and sinful generation)
THEN the Son of Man will be ASHAMED of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels.

INTERPRETATION:
I asked myself the significance of Jesus making this promise?
Jesus knows that there are people in this world who want to gain the accolades of this world to the extent that they will be ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words so they can fit in this adulterous and sinful generation. Jesus does not want that to happen to those Jesus is speaking with so Jesus gives them a promise that if they become ASHAMED of Him and His words then He will become ASHAMED of them when He comes in His Father's glory with the holy angels.

The Good News is that when we are not ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words, we are following after Jesus Christ who will not be ASHAMED of us. The adulterous and sinful generation is a terminology used to describe gaining the whole world at the expense of losing one's soul. Once that happens there is nothing in this world that can be used in exchange for the soul. Only Jesus Christ can save the soul.

IMPLICATIONS:
I saw important implications for my own life! I should not be ASHAMED of Jesus Christ and His Words in this adulterous and sinful generation. When I am not ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words then He will not be ASHAMED of me when He returns in the Father's glory with His angels. But the motivation should be because OF HIS LOVE FOR ME THAT I CANNOT BUT HELP LOVE JESUS BACK. After all that Jesus has done for me, loving Jesus should not even be an issue. Thank you Jesus for saving me and giving me new life.

Not being ashamed of Jesus means to me that I be bold to follow after God's own heart taking the Word of God to heart. When people see me I want them to know  that 'I am not ASHAMED of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power to save'

For me not being ASHAMED of Jesus and His Word also means acting upon His Word and making it known to others that the decisions I make are a reflection of my absolute belief in His Word. God's Word becomes my Absolute Truth.

HOW GOSPEL GIVES ME TESTIMONY REGARDING A.S.H.A.M.E.D:

I love letting others know the  love of Jesus by my words and by my actions. Just yesterday, a friend of mine asked me 'what is the black book in your hand and can I see it?' I told her it is the Bible. She was curious because she always saw it in my hand. She asked me, 'What religion?' I told her Christianity. She looked through it and asked me what it was about, if it was stories. I told her it is about God and all the stories that happened 2000 years ago. I told her that I read it in 33 days. She was amazed. I told her I used to be a campus minister and still love answering questions. She asked me if there are any TABOOS forbidden in the Bible to which I referred her to a friend of mine which opened the dialogue about faith, sin, etc.

I am so thankful for the brief opportunity to have been able to share with her. I wished I could have done more and brought up Jesus into the conversation but it did not happen BUT I am so thankful to Jesus for helping me not be ASHAMED to share with her tidbits about the Bible.

EXAMPLE 2:

One day, I wore a religious shirt to a Pitt game that said, "Get fired up with the Holy Spirit" and a poem beneath it that said,

Ramesh is my name.
Serving the Lord is my game.
Christ did not come for fame.
But to save you and me from the flame.
So give Christ a start
By giving Him your heart
So He can do His part
And Satan's fiery arrows you can dart.

While I was walking, I heard all kinds of ridicule but I was proud to show off Jesus Christ to those around me even though at times I was a bit uncomfortable because of the verbal persecution. But it was all worth it for the sake of Christ.

If I choose to follow after this adulterous and sinful generation, I put my soul in jeopardy and will become ASHAMED of Jesus because the world will put thoughts and feelings so that I will do that. I am glad Jesus helped me not to give in.

EXAMPLE 3:

I write a lot of religious poems and was so glad to read some of them at a poetry slam jam, open mic night, and at a game show contest to proclaim the love of Jesus Christ regardless of what people thought. One judge kept give me 'Zero' but it did not matter to me.

EXAMPLE 4:

It has not always been easy for me to proclaim Christ and His Absolute Truth. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and people like Elizabeth, Kevin, Kent, Paul, Chloe, Tom, Oliver, Amy, Andrea, Jason, Sara, Becky, Brad, Alison, Jonathan, Becky, Clint, David, Jeremiah, Brian, Sharon, etc who have made the Gospel of Jesus Christ a priority instead of shying away from God's Word and His Absolute Truth. I thank Jesus for their impact in students lives as a student or staff and their impact in my own life.

Some years ago, I was called a bigot, homophobe, intolerant, etc because I wrote a column titled, "With love, homosexuality can be cured", meaning with Christ's love. Some still label me that. Student leaders at that time saw what was happening and how I was not ASHAMED to 'Proclaim the Truth and Live the Truth' so they intervened. When we are not ASHAMED of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and take persecution, it can also motivate others because they see the power of the Gospel and they want to intervene. Power of the Gospel points out our own shortcomings and what Jesus Christ can do for us because of what He already did on the cross of Calvary and what He wants to do for us by His Abundant Grace that we cannot earn.

It has not been easy for me for I have been vilified by many. The Pitt News had published my column stating that Jesus can even heal homosexuality just as Jesus has the power to heal any disease. There was such a backlash that I broke the number of letters to the editor for that column and also instead of letters to the editors being published, anti-Ramesh columns were being published in the Pitt News. Eventually, a moratorium on anti-Ramesh columns was instituted by the Pitt News.

Friend, speaking out in favor of Jesus and His Word gave me joy. When there was opposition it made me only stronger to continue with the Lord's help to address issues such as homosexuality, abortion, plight of the poor, police brutality, etc. It starts with not being ASHAMED of Jesus Christ.

When we are not ASHAMED of Jesus Christ and His Word, God can bring something good out of it even through the persecution or ridicule. At the time this was happening, my student leaders of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at that time wanted to have a panel discussion on 'Homosexuality and Christianity, is there a compromise?'

This event was advertised briefly but the room became standing room only where I went up against a Phd candidate in favor of homosexuality. We both were Pitt News columnists at the time and this event was also attended by 7 Pitt News columnists. If anything, the Gospel of Jesus Christ went out in this meeting and even those who were practicing homosexuals felt loved by me.

Yes, friend when we stand out against issues that God is against then we will face ridicule but when we are not ASHAMED and continue to do what we are doing because our focus is on the Word of God, God will take care of the rest including letting others respect us even if they don't agree. That is how http://www.pittsburghstandard.com was born.

A publisher who wanted to start a print edition called Pittsburgh Standard had come to Pitt to recruit writers. He had seen my work with the Pitt News and I was recruited as Managing Editor of the newspaper. Eventually, I was able to get the rights to the newspaper and start publishing it online as I became the Editor-in-Chief and publisher of the online newspaper.

To this day our paper never shies away from addressing issues of morality, politics, faith, etc as we look to Christ to be our Guiding Light. There are those that have tried to stifle the paper because of our views and publications but we are not ASHAMED of Jesus Christ and His Words. Our paper addresses a lot of issues in the hopes of drawing people to Christ through the newspaper too.

I can share so many other stories with you where I was not ASHAMED of Christ and the fruit that came out of it even through the ridicule and persecution. I can also share stories of times I was ASHAMED to wear a shirt or hat because I would be ridiculed but now I wear it with JOY because I want Jesus proclaimed. I can only do that because of His GRACE working in my life showering me with His abundant love. Jesus loves you so much and wants to do that for you too!

I ask you now dear friend, why will you be ASHAMED of Jesus in life?
Dear friend, there are many things in this world we should be ASHAMED of in life and should not even be engaged in. Jesus called this world an adulterous and sinful generation. However, what we should never be ASHAMED of is Jesus and His Words.

You will be ASHAMED of Jesus and His Word if you believe the lies of Satan that this world will offer you such as,

'this is the 21st century so what's in the Bible does not apply anymore'
'you don't really believe in this Jesus stuff do you because it's just a crutch'
'you are told all these things because God does not want you to enjoy life'
'you can choose Jesus who you do not see or the world around you that you can'
'you don't have to believe in all this Bible stuff, no point being friends then'
'you are so backward and naive to believe in the Bible, come on grow up and use your mind'
'you are so intolerant, bigoted, homophobic, etc because you cling to this Bible', ETC

Friend, these are only some of the things Satan will use to make you ASHAMED of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and what the Word of God stands for. But, don't give in friend. If you give in, you will hide from Jesus and make your life a wilderness.

Only when we are ASHAMED of someone will we try to hide from them or at worse not want to be seen with them.

Do you do that with Jesus?
Do you not want people to know that you are a follower of Christ?

Sadly there are people who don't want others to know they are Christians because Jesus' teaching is radical and counter-cultural making them ASHAMED in front of their friends of this world so they keep their faith secret. Many do not even want others to know that they read the Bible and go to church. It is because knowing Jesus becomes counter-productive in their minds when they want to gain the things of this world instead of commendation of Christ who will say, "Well, done my good and faithful servant" if we don't give up in shame and follow Him faithfully.

Paul, the apostle also understood that there were people who were being attracted to the world and starting to be ASHAMED of Jesus because Jesus' standards and the world's standards didn't mix, so Paul made a profound statement to the Romans:

"I am not ASHAMED of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."(Romans 1:16-17, NIV)

Friend, the Bible is the Word of God for "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NIV)

This means when the Word of God speaks against vices of sins we should not be ASHAMED of the Word just because the world looks funny at us and labels us as intolerant, bigoted, etc.

The buzz phrases such as 'those intolerant and bigoted Christians' are meant to invoke a response to the point that we become ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words because we are labeled intolerant and bigoted by the world.

It is okay to be labeled and name-called as long as we are following the Word of God and expressing it in love. For when we decide not to do that then we are ASHAMED of Jesus and His Word. Let us not be ASHAMED of Jesus and His Word.

It is better for the world to be ASHAMED of you then Christ to be ASHAMED of you. The world will be ASHAMED of those who follow the commands of Christ especially when it puts them in the spotlight but we are called to be the light of the world. This also means to expose the deeds of darkness.

Never let the world's standards keep you away from the Lord Jesus Christ and His standards. Friend, going after the world is not worth it if it means giving up your soul to be accepted by the friends of this world. We need to be a friend of God first before we become a friend of this world.

We are called to be part of this world to engage it in all its ethnic diversity with the Gospel of Jesus Christ but not to take part in the deeds of darkness that this world continues to offer.

Friend, when you are not ASHAMED of Jesus and His Word you will face opposition and ridicule. You will be called intolerant and bigoted but don't let those words stop you from obeying the Word of God. It is okay to be labeled many names as long as you are following the manual of life God has given us for our life.

There was a student who stood up to oppose his professor because the professor spoke out against Jesus but the student believed Jesus is God. The outcome is amazing. I am not sure if this is a true story but the principle is still amazing.

The first day of philosophy class of 300, a professor told the class that he does not believe there is a God and that he dares anyone to challenge him by getting up from their seat and standing up. At the time there was a pin drop silence and would have been an ample time for anyone who had faith in Jesus Christ to be ASHAMED and continue to sit down because they don't want to be ridiculed by the professor or the classmates but one student started to get up and stood up.

The professor started to mock the student in front of his classmates and said, 'If there is a God let us see if he can stop the chalk that I am going to throw on the floor from breaking into two pieces'

While he was still talking the chalk slipped from his hands rolled down his pants and rolled away without breaking. The students were amazed and the professor was put in his place. The student that had stood up had the opportunity to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who wanted to listen.

Let us not be ASHAMED of Jesus or His Words. By not being ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words, we will want to introduce Jesus and His Words to others even if they ridicule us.

Friend, more than anything we should not be ASHAMED of Jesus and what He came to accomplish. For in Christ alone is our Salvation for our souls. To this day, Scripture has always Messiah's emancipation delivered.

While we were yet sinners, Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins by shedding His precious cleansing blood that we can have Eternal Life when we turn to Him. His blood became the antidote for the virus known as sin. Only His blood could cleanse us of all our unrighteousness and make us right with God as we yield our lives to Him.

You and I can do that by giving our lives to Jesus and what He has to offer. When we do that we are proclaiming by our surrender that we are not ASHAMED of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the power of Christ alone to save us and deliver us. Only when we are not ASHAMED of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can revival in this land begin again.

May we never be ASHAMED of Jesus and His Words for He has paid the ransom for our sins that we can become right with God! Amen!

"ASHAMED? Scripture Has Always Messiah's Emancipation Delivered! (A.S.H.A.M.E.D)"/"What will you be A.S.H.A.M.E.D of Jesus in life?"

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you so much for loving us so much and dying for our sin on the cross. You shed your precious cleansing blood for us that we can have new life when we turn to you. Thank you so much Jesus. Thank you for your wonderful love. Help us never to be ASHAMED of you and your Words. Help us to always turn to you and be willing to speak for you and let others know that we are your followers. Oh Lord protect us from the enemy and the lies that are perpetuated by Satan. We need your help. Thank you so much Jesus. Thank you for hearing our prayers and answering us. Hear us and guide us Oh Lord for the honor and glory of your Name. Thank you so much for not abandoning us. We are so sorry for our sin and confess our sins to you. Lead us by your Light for your Word is Truth and you proclaim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life too. Thank you so much Jesus. Thank you for hearing us and answering us! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

May you experience the POWER OF CHRIST'S RESURRECTION this day, and give Him the LOCKED areas of your life too so you can experience His PEACE as you become an ACTOR in the film called LIFE being directed by your DIRECTOR, JESUS CHRIST who comes to give JOY and PEACE.

You don't have to be locked away anymore for Christ is here to free you and give you peace to live out your actions.

How do you look at GODISNOWHERE?

One of my pastors, Pastor Hugo SHARED this example one Sunday at the RESURRECTION DAY SERVICE in the combined worship service of Pittsburgh Chinese Church-Oakland & Oakland International Fellowship:

If you look at it as GOD IS NO WHERE, you will still be lost in your sin and be in bondage locked away in your sins and problems finding no peace.

But  as my pastor spoke to the congregation and spoke to me, I am here to tell you that GOD IS NOW HERE.

Yes, friend God is alive and wants to bring a transformation in your life through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for He paid the penalty on the cross to rescue you and me and came back to life to save us and live with us.

Yes, friend that is exciting to know that we can experience HIS SAVING GRACE & LIVING GRACE.

When we mess up, we can go to Jesus with our shortcomings and He will forgive us and RESTORE us to Him and we will find peace in Him.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (Colossians 5:17-21, NIV)

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23, NIV)

"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:7-9, NIV)

Friend, we need Jesus because we have been separated from God due to our sin. Because of our sin, Jesus had to pay the price to become our bridge so we can reach God now not of our own good works but because of the finished work of Christ, the Lord on the cross.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)

Come to Jesus as you are and pray this prayer to accept Jesus as your Lord and Personal Savior. He will transform your life around! Praise the Lord! You don't have to have all the answers! You can come as you are!

Prayer:
Jesus, I thank you for being the BREAD of Life. You are the Living BREAD of my life. Thank you for coming from Heaven and giving your life for the life of the world. You sacrificed yourself for humanity. Thank you Lord when we eat of you symbolically making you part of our life, digesting what you teach us by following you, we can be living Eternally, and the fruit that comes will reflect and resemble your life. I want that Father God. I want that Lord Jesus! I want that Holy Spirit! I know of a lot of people who partake of Holy Communion where the BREAD represents your body broken for their sin and the juice represents your blood shed for their sin. When we partake of Holy Communion, we are reminded that we are remembering you. I want to remember you always Lord Jesus. But for me to remember you always, I need to know you and acknowledge everything you said you are. So right now I acknowledge that you are my Lord and Personal Savior who died and rose again to give me life from sin. So right now, I come to you and say how sorry I am for my sin and living a life on my own. I repent of my sin and ask you to forgive me of my sin with your cleansing blood which I accept. Wash me and I will be clean from this infection of sin. Come Lord Jesus and please become part of my life as you live in me and I will live for you. I thank you Jesus for coming into my heart and making my heart your home. Thank you for living in me Jesus and I will live for you and serve you the rest of the days of my life. I do need your Spirit to reside in me and work in me and through me so I surrender all that I am and will be to you. Whatever your will is for me, please give me the strength and willingness to bear it and rejoice in you. Thank you so much Jesus. I thank you Jesus for becoming my Lord and Personal Savior. I thank you Jesus you have heard my prayer and have answered me. I thank you that I am your child Oh God. I thank you for becoming my only Way to Eternal Life. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

No matter what you feel in your heart, know that Jesus has come in and resides with you! You are not alone! To make your walk strong with the Lord, spend time in prayer talking to Him as you would to a friend. You don’t need special words to talk to the Lord. Spend time in His Word reading Psalms and turning them into prayer. Next allow God to heal you and speak to you through the Gospel of John or Gospel of Mark before moving on to other Books of the Bible! Slowly, let the Lord show you to which Scriptures He wants you to go to next. It is also important to be part of a body of believers to help you grow in the faith. Find a Bible believing church that preaches the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation proclaiming Jesus Christ our crucified and risen Lord who brings us hope, healing, and help! But beware of churches who do believe in the Word of God completely but there is no freedom in Christ but legalism involved.

As a professional, it is not too late to join a church! As a student, it is not too late to join a fellowship on campus this  new year of 2009! May the Lord's presence and peace fill you with His love now and forever! Amen!

Friend, if you have prayed this prayer and meant it in your heart, you are a new creation in Christ and all old things are passed away and everything has become new! You may feel something or may not but don’t base it on feelings but base your new life in Christ on the promises of our Savior who will never leave you nor forsake you! Amen!

Spend time in His word and let the Lord speak to you! Start out in the Gospel of John! You can also check out the Gospel of Mark which are the devotionals I have been going through.  Learn from Jesus through study and prayer. Also find yourself a church fellowship and a college fellowship you can be part of where you can be part of a community of believers to supplement your own walk with the Lord. Let it be a Bible-believing and Bible-breathing church! Believe in Bible Live Eternally!

Feel free to email me at reddy4hisglory2004@yahoo.com if you want to meet to study the Bible, pray with, talk about Spiritual issues or whatever is on your mind! My number is 412-720-4579
