Hostility Occurs Since There Is Loveless Impact Through You!” (H.O.S.T.I.L.I.T.Y)

Ramesh C. Reddy
Publisher

SCRIPTURE:

"He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us." (Ephesians 2:16-18, NLT)

Observations:
I asked myself what has Christ done between Jews and Gentiles?

1.   Christ made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in Himself one new people from the two groups. (v. 15)

2.   Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross. (v. 16)

3.   Christ put to death our hostility towards each other. (v.16)

4.   Christ brought this Good News of peace to both Jews and Gentiles. (v.17)

5.   Christ gives Jews and Gentiles access to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what He has done for us. (v.18)

Interpretation/Discussion:

I asked myself what can be inferred from the statement, “Christ made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in Himself one new people from the two groups?”

There was enormous hostility between Jews and Gentiles that Christ’s intervention alone would make peace and break down the wall of hostility that created a barrier between them. It is so cool that ‘Christ made peace’ is used because it shows that the creation of peace starts with Christ and Christ alone. Apart from Christ the hostility would continue to grow building barriers and there would have been no peace between Jew and Gentile but because Christ decided to intervene by creating in Himself one new people from the two groups, barriers are broken down.

Interpretation/Discussion:

I asked myself why is it significant to understand ‘By creating in Himself one new people from the two groups?’
‘By creating in Himself one new people from the two groups’, Jesus is showing no matter what hostility existed between Jews and Gentiles regardless of the form it took whether religious, economical, racial, etc, they don’t have to be held bondage to that but what matters is what they will become in Christ. In Christ, they will become one new people from the two groups. This is so exciting to know because it shows the newness Christ brings to those grafted into His body. The old is gone and the new has come. It also shows that in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Gentile, male nor female, rich or poor, white, black, or brown, etc but we are all one new people. This newness is governed by Christ Jesus, the head of the body of Christ, which we are.

Observation:
I asked myself from two groups, to make the body of Christ, how did Christ create in Himself one new people?
The answer is revealed in v. 16 which says,
Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.”

Observation:

I asked myself what is the three-fold cause-effect relationship we see in v. 16-17?

1.   Because of Christ’s death on the cross, the effect is together as one body both groups have been reconciled to God being made into one new people.

2.   Because of Christ’s death on the cross and being made into one new people, the effect is our hostility toward each other was put to death.

3.   Because of Christ’s death on the cross, as a new people we have access to the Father through the same Holy Spirit.

Implications:

I asked myself what are the implications for my own life?
The implications are so profound because these verses show me that hostility should have no place in my life when I have found my identity in Christ which is a new identity. This identity is not based on rules and regulations, on the do’s and don’ts, on economic, racial, ethnic, or caste status but wholly on being grafted into the body of Christ by Christ Himself.

I shared with our small group members Calvin, Jeff, Eric, Johannes, and Cecilia that an Indian friend was very shocked that I became a follower of Christ since I was a Reddy. In his mind, Reddy's rarely became Christians but thanks be to God by His grace our family became the first family in our generation line to be touched by the Lord's grace to become His very own. It is not of anything we did but all of Christ.

It was not easy for my beloved dad to explain to his Hindu friends how we all became followers of Christ since he had a very prestigious position and job but eventually even my dad gave his life to Christ before he went to be with the Lord. Thank you Jesus. In Christ, our caste should not matter because Christ came to take away all that and make us new in Him.

So, being grafted into the body of Christ and living in Him and for Him as He abides in me, the result should only be harmony because God is a God of peace and not hostility to those who belong to Him. When I belong to the body of Christ the newness of life in Christ should never be individualistic but communal as one new people regardless of our ethnicity, cultural background, economic background, etc.

My Pastor Hugo Cheng of Oakland International Fellowship has always emphasized three words in our church as one new people that we should be striving  for in a Deeper, Stronger, and Greater way with Christ as our Cornerstone when it comes to Faith, Community, and Outreach. Hence our vision is Deeper Faith, Stronger Community, and Greater Impact. If I am striving towards these 3 areas in my life than hostility will not be given a place in my words or deeds because the focus will be on being a Servant of the Lord as the Apostle Paul was and trained Timothy to be in the Lord as Pastor Hugo shared in his Sunday sermon this past week.

Only in Christ can I strive for peace instead of hostility no matter what has happened in my life. For when I allow Christ to work in me, He will do the creating of peace and all He wants for me and give me full access to the Father of Creation through the same Holy Spirit. This is so exciting to know because the same Holy Spirit will not give contradicting messages to the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit will reveal the same message of peace towards one another to break down the wall of hostility. Thank you Jesus!

I ask you now dear friends, what can Christ do with the relational H.O.S.T.I.L.I.T.Y  in your life?
Dear friends, Christ alone can break down the wall of hostility in our lives that builds barriers instead of tearing them down. Hostility can come in many shapes and forms! It can be because of a false sense of righteousness or superiority thinking we are better than someone else causing us to look down on others whatever the reasoning maybe or it can be because of relational conflicts whatever the reasons maybe. This causes us to build barriers having a ‘us vs. them mentality’. It can also be because of rules and regulations, because of do’s and don’ts, because of racial, ethnic, or even economic status.

My friend Calvin of our Transformers small group shared a story about a Jewish person and Gentile person’s experience with an elevator in Israel that occurred on a Sabbath day. A Gentile person went into the elevator not seeing that it was reserved only for Jewish people observing the Sabbath. When the Jewish person saw the Gentile person get on the elevator, the Jewish person was flabbergasted because to him the Gentile person defiled the elevator by not only getting on but to make things worse, the Gentile person started pushing buttons on the elevator. The Jewish person told the Gentile person that by pressing the elevator buttons, work was being done on the Sabbath and it defiled the whole elevator. Hence, not only did the Gentile person have to get off the elevator but they made sure the elevator was cleaned to make it pure in their eyes. This caused hostility between the Jewish person and Gentile person.

It is into situations like this and others that Christ wants to enter the hearts of people and show that He is the way to peace and God. Access to the Father is not through the law and commandments but through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ because of His blood shed on the cross of Calvary to take away the hostility that existed between ‘God and man’ and ‘man and man’. The hostility existed because of sin that has created a wall of barrier between God and man and then between man and man.

This sin has separated us from true fellowship with the Father and with each other. But now through the cross of Christ where He shed His precious blood for you and me coming back to life on the Third day. Now, he has become our mediator between God and Man. Now when God looks at us, He sees Christ’s blood covering over us so we become reconciled to God not because of any works we do but solely on the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. His grace is enough to save you and me. Come as you are and confess your sins before the Lord and ask Christ to cover you in His precious cleansing blood to wash you clean and give you new life. He will do that friend more than you can ever know.

For when Christ died on the cross, His blood shed gave newness of life to all who would receive Him. With that newness of life entered the Holy Spirit to dwell in every heart that belongs to Him. Praise the Lord! So when the Holy Spirit resides in hearts, the hearts can experience the Fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, meekness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these for they are the opposite of hostility. In Christ, we become a new people of peace who follow the Prince of Peace when we walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Thank you Jesus!

So friend, when you allow Jesus Christ to reign in your life and make Him supreme over your life, hostility will be a by gone word and be replaced with peace. For apart from Christ there cannot be a new people but people stuck in their old ways. Only in Christ can we become a new people, governed by Him who is the head of the church, the body of Christ. Without the head, the body falls apart and dies but in Christ and being grafted into Christ our Vine, we will have new life everyday as we rest in Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our nourishment is drawn from Christ to give us peace for He is the Prince of Peace. You can have that today friend.

Hostility towards others could also be because of their political views, their way of parenting,  their way of leading ministry, their lifestyle views that you may disagree with, their cultural views that you disagree with, their musical styles, their entertainment views, etc. But regardless of what makes you  build a wall of hostility, remember when the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed! It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, so stand firm. Do not let yourself be burdened then  by a yoke of slavery!

You may be thinking, it’s easier for him to say that but if he knows what others have put me through and what I am going through, he will understand why there is relational hostility. Friend, I may not understand the relational hostility you have been put through;  what relational hostility you have caused because of others views and how they do things, but this I can say for sure that whatever we have been put through or what we put others through does not compare at all to what we put Christ through.

To break down the wall of hostility between us and God, Jesus paid the price on an old rugged cross dying for us, to take upon Himself the burden of our sin. He did that to make us new people in Him. He tore down the veil that separated man from God by putting to death the hostility between us and God & us and man.

It is you and I that nailed Him there so when we want to be hostile towards others for wronging us, let us look to the cross of Christ and find our peace in Christ, our Prince of Peace. When we allow Him to take care of us, Peace Enters As Christ Enters.

Whatever relational hostility you are in with your fellow man or woman, realize how far Jesus went to restore fellowship between you and God to reconcile you both. When you realize the magnitude of  what Jesus did for you and God’s love and grace for you through Christ, you will be prompted to show love that takes away hostility towards those that have hurt you.  This can only happen when Christ works in your life. He wants to friend. Yes he does! He wants to work in you through the power of the Holy Spirit.

If you have let the enemy creep hostility into your life, don’t remain there but choose to go the path of peace trusting in the Prince of Peace for He promises you His peace in all circumstances. Jesus says, “My peace I give you; the peace I give is not like the peace the world gives, so don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:26) and “Perfect peace have those who put their trust in thee!” (Isaiah 26:3)

Each of us face relational hostility in different forms but all hostility can be put to death in Christ at least from our end.

Scripture states, “As much as it depends on you, be at peace with one another!”

If someone is hostile towards you, don’t retaliate but show them Christ’s love. It is the love of Christ that mends hearts. You and I can learn all we want about racial reconciliation, eliminating prejudice, relational reconciliation, etc, but without the touch of Christ in our lives, they will always become just exercises without fruit. Only in Christ can we all become new people when we live as new people of the Kingdom of God. For that we need to be trained in Bible Academy with Jesus Christ as our tenured Perfect Professor of Grace.

Whatever the hostility you are facing, take it to the Perfect Professor of Grace and let Him profess to you the Words of His mouth. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly with all wisdom.... and just as you have trusted Christ to save you, trust Him also daily with all your problems; let your roots grow deep into Him and draw your nourishment in Him. For when you are nourished in Him, peace will only be the vocabulary you speak instead of hostility. It has to do with us being in His Word and prayer in our own times with the Lord and also communally. Remember, we are the body of Christ of which He is the Head. The body will become hostile and die without the Head of the Body which is Christ. So in Christ and Christ alone do we have life together being reconciled to God and having access to the Father through the Holy Spirit which dwells in us! Praise the Lord!

May you rest in the Lord Jesus Christ knowing He will help you overcome all types of relational hostility through the power of His love.

“Hostility Occurs Since There Is Loveless Impact Through You!” (H.O.S.T.I.L.I.T.Y)/”What can Christ do with the relational H.O.S.T.I.L.I.T.Y in your life?”

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you so much for the power of your love and Word. Thank you so much for being responsible for the creation of peace by making Jew and Gentile into one new people out of the two groups when they come to know you as their Lord and Personal Savior. Oh Lord, thank you for saving me. Thank you for breaking down the wall of hostility between God and me. You became my Mediator to intercede on my behalf before Father God so I can have access to the Father. Thanks so much for giving us the same Holy Spirit to work in us and through us. Oh Lord, I pray you would help us to attain for peace because we serve the Prince of Peace. Oh Lord, our Prince of Peace please reign in our lives today. Let your Word dwell in us to make us whole. You know the hostility we face and only you Oh Lord can help us through it. Forgive us our sins Oh Lord and thank you for restoring us to you through what you did on the cross of Calvary. Now we are covered in your precious cleansing blood which washes away all our sin. Thank you Lord as the Father looks at us, He sees your Holy Righteousness imputed to us and judgment will pass over us. We love you Lord and need you in our lives. I pray for the one who needs your help in reconciliation that you will become the reconciler for you Oh Lord can reconcile anyone your Way so please intervene. Thanks so much Jesus. Thank you that we belong to you. Thank you for this time and what I have learned. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

Lord Jesus, You are my all in all. You are my Prince of Peace, Rock, Savior, and Friend. You are my Holy Father guiding me through to live a life of righteousness, holy righteousness. Oh God, I need you more than ever. I need to feel your hands around me holding me tight. I need your love to surround me so that you can glow in my life. Help me please Jesus. I desire in your presence. Thank you for guiding me to live a life of righteousness. Oh God you love me more than ever. You hear my voice when I cry out to you. When I seek your face, you fill me up. You are my all in all. Thank you Jesus so much for your help no matter what I face, your grace is available and you take my case. Thank you for hearing us and answering us. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! AMEN! (Most of the prayer is from a vineyard song called “All in All”)
