Spiritual CONNECTIONS - SPOILER ALERTS:

SPOILER ALERT I:

There are two guys rowing in a boat. One of the guys is looking at a book that looks like a Bible. He starts talking to the other guy about Providence providing. The other guy tells him ‘you cannot even read’ to which the guy who has a book in his hand replies. “IT IS THE BIBLE. YOU GET CREDIT JUST FOR TRYING” This was my favorite quote of the movie. I love the way they introduced the Bible into the movie. This reminded me of all the benefits of reading the Bible.

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8, NIV)

“Then he said to me, ‘Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.’ So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.” (Ezekiel 3:3, NIV)

“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” (Psalm 19:7-8, NIV)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105, NIV)

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4, NIV)

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NIV)

SPOILER ALERT II:

Davy Jones who is supposed to be a typological representation of the devil, says to one of the captives that the captives soul belongs to the devil. The captive refuses to sell his soul to the devil and be in his service. He was not going to give into the devil. This cost him his life but he would rather take a chance to die than belong to the devil. This reminded me of Bible verses dealing with the soul and the devil. It is better to use our soul in service of the Lord even if it means death than to serve the devil.

Part I:

“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5, NIV)

“But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul." (Joshua 22:5, NIV)

“Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the LORD your God.” (1 Chronicles 22:19, NIV)

“My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.” (Psalm 34:2, NIV)

“I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.” (Psalm 130:5, NIV)

Part II:

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28, NIV)

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26, NIV)

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11)

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV)

Questions to Ponder:

  1. What does the Bible mean to you?

  2. How did it make you feel to see the man in the boat looking at the Bible?

  3. What does your soul mean to you?

  4. Who will have your soul and why?

  5. How can you ensure your soul belongs to the Lord Jesus?
