“New NCAA March Madness  Standard's Style Tough Tournament Challenge Competition”

By Ramesh C.Reddy
Pittsburgh Standard

Monday, March 16, 2009

Editors note: The Pittsburgh Standard does not adhere to gambling or betting. I present this game to you to have fun and challenge yourself to know different teams in the NCAA during the NCAA Tournament. The best way to do that is finding out about the teams and challenging yourself to predict winners based on the teams and anticipating upsets can happen. Even though I am playing the game, I will excuse myself from being the final winner. The runner up will receive the prize of up to $128.00 depending on what is banked.

Introduction:
Welcome to the new NCAA March Madness Standard's Style Tough Tournament Challenge Competition where you can win up to $128.00 from Pittsburgh Standard (PS).

The rules you see here have been made by the Pittsburgh Standard to be unique compared to the rules of other NCAA Tournament Bracket Selection Challenges.

For your picks, you have to use the CBSSports.com NCAA Brackets on Facebook at  http://apps.facebook.com/cbssports/groups/group/178011 and join the group Pittsburgh Standard's Style Tough Tournament Challenge Competition.

Those brackets you fill out as part of that group will be used for this competition where you can win anywhere up to $128.00. I say up to because it depends on how much is banked in each round.

In the first round, anyone who joins the PS group will be eligible for the prize whether there are 64 contestants or 640 contestants if they can advance all the way.

The PS will only use your picks from the facebook group mentioned above for the competition but the rules of the PS apply for the prize.  You will be invited by the PS into this group.

Rules:
After 1st round is over, the top 34 students with the most points will advance to the next round. The more upsets you pick and win, the more points you will receive too but if you pick upsets and lose, you will lose points too which will also affect the bank.

Whatever money was banked in the first round based on the picks of others will be moved into the second round up to $20.48 being the highest. Each rounds' money will never be diminished once it is banked but will be added to the money of every other round. After all 6 rounds, $128.00 is the highest that can be banked.

After Round 1, 1 cent/win times 32 picks = 32 cents/person. You can earn 32 cents/person * 64 students participating = 2048 cents in Round 1 This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in Round 1.

If more than 64 participate in Round 1, the cents will be proportionally adjusted so $20.48 still becomes the maximum that can be banked.

After Round 1 is over, 32+ teams will be eliminated!!!  After Round 1 is over, 32 students will be eliminated!!!

In Round 2, earn 4 cent per win times 16 picks =  64 cents/person.    You can earn 64 cents/person * 32 students participating = 2048 cents in Round 2 This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in Round 2.

After Round 2 is over, 16 teams will be eliminated!!!   After Round 2 is over, 16 students will be eliminated!!!

In the Sweet 16, earn 16 cents/win times times 8 picks = 128 cents/person    You can earn 128 cents/person * 16 students participating = 2048 cents in Sweet 16 This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in Sweet 16

After Sweet 16 is over, 8 teams will be eliminated!!!   After Sweet 16 is over, 8 students will be eliminated!!!

In the Elite 8, earn 64 cents/win times 4 picks = 256 cents/person   You can earn 256 cents/person * 8 students participating = 2048 cents in Elite 8 This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in Elite 8

After Elite 8 is over, 4 teams will be eliminated!!!!   After Elite 8 is over, 4 students also will be eliminated!!!!

In the Final Four, earn 256 cents/win times 2 picks = 512 cents/person   You can earn 512 cents/person * 4 students participating = 2048 cents in Final 4 This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in Final Four

After Final Four 2 teams and 2 students will be eliminated!!!   In the championship game, earn 1024 cents/win times 1 pick = 1024 cents/person   You can earn 1024 cents/person *2 students participating = 2048 cents in Championship Game. This is $20.48 cents possible winnings in the Championship Game!!!

Scoring points:

In Round 1, you receive 10 bonus points for every team you picked that won and your points get doubled in the additional rounds if your teams advance, i.e.:  2nd round: 20 pts, Sweet 16: 40 pts, Elite 8: 80 pts, Final Four: 160 points, Semifinals: 320 pts and Championship: 640 pts. If your team loses then you receive negative points with the same procedures.

Points are also based on the teams’ rankings and whether or not they are favorites or underdogs.

You get more points if you pick underdog teams and they advance to the next round.  If  you pick #1 seed to advance to the next round and it does, you  gain 1 point but if you pick #16 over #1 to advance and it happens, you  get 16 points. The same procedure applies to all rankings.

For example, if you picked North Carolina to advance to next round and they do, you will get 10 points + 1 point for their ranking which will give you 11 points. If you picked North Carolina and they lost, you will get -10 + -1 = -11 points.

There is also a penalty if you pick a favorite/underdog team and they lose. The penalty is higher if your underdog team loses because you took a higher risk and failed. If you picked  #16 ranked team and it loses, you lose 16 points for that round and every round you had picked that team. The same procedure applies to all rankings.

The perfect score you can receive based on ranks alone in the game is 2740 and the lowest is –2740 if all the underdog teams win/lose and you picked all 32 of them .The perfect score you can receive based on rankings alone in the game is  2103 and the lowest is -2103 if all the favorite teams win/lose and you picked all 32 of them.

The rank score is added on to the points score for each correct pick.

If all contestants are in the negative, no one wins. You have to have a  positive score higher than your opponents even if it is just 1 pt at the end of the contest.

We will try to  update your daily progress starting March 19, 2009  until April 7, 2009 regarding who is in the lead and how many points they have.

Will you be the one that gets jammed into the elimination pool or will you be the one that jams on to become the winner?

Find out each day starting on Thurs, March 19, 2009 - Monday, April 06, 2009 where you stand in the PS rankings.

The winner will be announced hopefully on April 07, 2009.

The students who have been eliminated from the PS challenge, those that are currently still in the challenge, the points of each challenger, and the money banked in each round will be posted in a separate link.
