“Believe Lord Emancipates Saving Souls!”

By Ramesh C.Reddy

March 17, 2008

Editors Note: The devotional has a background song by called 'Hosanna' which can be heard if you use Internet Explorer.

SCRIPTURE:
“The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt." (John 12:12-15, NIV)

Observations:
I asked myself what was the actions of the crowd when they heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem?
1. They took palm branches.
2. They went out to meet Jesus.
3. They shouted "Hosanna!"
4. They shouted "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"
5. "Blessed is the King of Israel"

Interpretations:
I asked myself the significance of taking palm branches?
The Palm branch was used as symbol of triumph and victory in pre-Christian times. So, when the people waved palm branches as Jesus was making His entry into Jerusalem, they were proclaiming victory in Jesus Christ. Usually the Romans used palm branches as a symbol during military conquests and victories as they rode horses. Now, the people use the Palm branches not to celebrate the Romans influence over Jerusalem but to meet Jesus' and acknowledge His influence over Jerusalem. This is evident by points 2-5.

I asked myself the significance of shouting, 'Hosanna!'?
Hosanna is a Jewish expression for the word, 'SAVE'. The people already were declaring victory by waving Palm branches as Jesus came to Jerusalem. But they go a step further. They shout for Jesus to SAVE them. Since Jerusalem was under the influence of the Roman empire, it is possible they were asking Jesus to save them from the Romans. Regardless, they acknowledge Jesus alone can SAVE when they kept shouting 'Hosanna' as they waved the Palm branches. These days when we use the word, 'Hosanna', we use it as an expression of praise to the Lord knowing He is the One that saves.

I asked myself the significance of shouting, 'Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord?'
First of all, the crowds are acknowledging that Jesus is no ordinary human being but is One who comes in the Name of the Lord. Because Jesus comes in the Name of the Lord, they are also acknowledging that JESUS is BLESSED and decide to bless Jesus. This is also evident by a prophecy that is fulfilled from Psalm 118:25-26 which states, "
O LORD, save us;O LORD, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you."

I asked myself the significance of shouting, "Blessed is the King of Israel"?
First of all, the crowds acknowledge that Jesus is the King of Israel and called Jesus blessed. Also, based on Psalm 118:26, I believe the crowds are blessing Jesus here too. It is also very significant to understand what 'bless' means here.

Bless means to bestow holiness on somebody or something in a religious ceremony.
Source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

This is what the great crowd is doing when they bless Jesus, bestowing holiness on the King of Israel in their religious ceremony of waving Palm branches and shouting 'Hosanna'!

IMPLICATIONS:
I saw important implications for my own life as I travel back into time and place myself in the crowd cheering Jesus on. When I use a Palm branch to welcome Jesus, I am actually proclaiming victory and triumph in Christ. Hosanna needs to become a regular part of my vocabulary as I proclaim, 'Hosanna' before the Lord. Everyday, I proclaim Hosanna before the Lord, I am proclaiming that Jesus alone can SAVE me. It also becomes a praise knowing that in Christ, I can be saved. Jesus not only becomes my Savior, one who Saves but also is my King of Kings. I need to bless the Lord. We do not think about blessing the Lord but always about how the Lord can bless us. Here we see that the crowd took it upon themselves to bless the Lord and I need to do that too.

I ask you now dear friend, how can you bless the Lord this HOLY WEEK?
Dear friend, as Holy Week has begun, instead of looking for blessings from the Lord, we need to bless the Lord for all He has done for us. We need to acknowledge the holiness of Jesus Christ and because of His holiness that is why He can SAVE us. Jesus is without sin and the spotless Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world. Jesus came to take your sin and my sin upon Himself so that we can be set free and delivered.

When the great crowds waved Palm branches and celebrated Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, it was a foreshadow of the victory and triumph Jesus will bring to us over Satan. When the crowds shouted, 'Hosanna' 'Blessed be the One who comes in the Name of the Lord' Blessed is the King of Israel', they were not just feel good statements but packed with nuggets of saving Truth. We learn that Jesus is acknowledged as the One who saves. So, when you shout 'Hosanna' in praise to Jesus, you can proclaim too that Jesus saves. You are actually acknowledging that Jesus came in the Name of the Lord. When you bless Jesus, you are acknowledging Jesus alone is holy and He alone can save you.

So friend, as we celebrate Holy Week and Palm Sunday was celebrated yesterday, let us bless the Lord Jesus daily acknowledging, He alone can SAVE us to. The crowd gathered there were probably asking Jesus to save them from Roman oppression but Jesus did not come to just save people from physical oppression but Jesus' mission was to save humanity from spiritual oppression. When I say spiritual oppression, I am talking about how sin oppresses our lives and makes us a prisoner of Satan and his ways. Jesus came to deliver us and save us from that.

So won't you come to Jesus as you are and ask Him to save you and bless the Lord acknowledging His holiness. You can do that right now. Now is the time of Salvation. You do not have to wait for that special day. Jesus died on the cross to save you from oppression to Satan and sin. Now when you come to Jesus, He will cleanse you with His precious cleansing blood and wash you clean. It did not end with death but Jesus came back to life on the third day to save. Jesus is alive today too and so just as the crowds shouted 'Hosanna' and blessed the Lord, we can do that today too.

People waved branches of palm!
Ackowledging Jesus with a praise Psalm!
Loudly shouting Hosanna without being calm!
Messiah's triumphant entry was also seen by Tom (Thomas)!

Savior rode donkey's colt as a King!
Understood to save, He would soon face the death ring! (Cross)
Now that did not stop Jesus from being meek!
Daily desiring lost souls to seek!
And fulfilling prophecy, "Your King do not fear!"
You people of Israel (Us too now) who are so dear!

To be continued....

"Believe Lord Emancipates Saving Souls!"(B.L.E.S.S)/"How can you bless the Lord this Holy Week?"

Prayer:
Jesus, I read about your triumphant entry into Jerusalem and how the crowds praised you and blessed you asking for your help knowing you alone can save. So Lord, I come to you now and bless you Lord knowing you are holy. Because you are Holy, you can take away my sin and make me clean in your sight so I can live for you and serve you, delivered from the bondage of sin. I need you Jesus to forgive me of all my sin and wash me with your precious cleansing blood that was shed on the cross for me to save me as you saved those 2000 years ago that sought you. Come Lord Jesus and save my life from the oppression of Satan and give me a new beginning in you Lord. Be my Lord and Savior being the King of kings and Lord of lords. You have come in the Name of the Lord and I thank you for saving me as I turn to you. Thank you since you save, you are my God who is Holy for God alone is Holy and can save. You came as God incarnate into this world to save humanity. Thank you so much Jesus. I love you Lord and give my life over to you and ask you for help. Thanks so much Jesus. In Your Precious Name I pray Jesus! Amen!

Friend, if you have prayed this prayer and meant it in your heart, you are a new creation in Christ and all old things are passed away and everything has become new! You may feel something or may not but don’t base it on feelings but base your new life in Christ on the promises of our Savior who will never leave you nor forsake you! Amen!

No matter what you feel in your heart, know that Jesus has come in and resides with you! You are not alone! To make your walk strong with the Lord, spend time in prayer talking to Him as you would to a friend. You don’t need special words to talk to the Lord. Spend time in His Word reading Psalms and turning them into prayer. Next allow God to heal you and speak to you through the Gospel of John or Gospel of Mark before moving on to other Books of the Bible! Slowly, let the Lord show you to which Scriptures He wants you to go to next. It is also important to be part of a body of believers to help you grow in the faith. Find a Bible believing church that preaches the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation proclaiming Jesus Christ our crucified and risen Lord who brings us hope, healing, and help! But beware of churches who do believe in the Word of God completely but there is no freedom in Christ but legalism involved.

As a student, it is not too late to join a fellowship on campus too this blessed New Year of 2008! May the Lord's presence and peace fill you with His love now and forever! Amen!
