If you are an Asian, what would your parents expect you to be? What do you expect to be when you are in your 30’s? A lot of my Asian friends are either studying to be doctors, engineers, or software engineers to have a prestigious career in their 20’s let alone 30’s. When I was growing up, I wanted to be the top lawyer in the nation one day but never dreamed that I would become a campus minister for couple of years and have a passion for student ministry. That is what happened to me in my early 20’s when I gave up law school to do ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Those were trying years for me but I would not trade all the memories and the lives the Lord Jesus helped me to touch in those years.

To this day, the Lord Jesus has put a burden upon my heart to do student ministry and has used me to do ministry in unconventional ways, the best of them being the utilization of http://www.pittsburghstandard.com and http://www.facebook.com for His honor and glory!

The Lord Jesus has also provided me opportunities for ministry through my church, Oakland International Fellowship.

Speaking of ministry, I remember sharing with students, ’What do you do with your P.R.O.F.E.S.S.I.O.N?’ and ’What kind of S.H.E.P.H.E.R.D’ will you be?’

Thinking about those two devotionals meant a lot to me this week as my Asian friend decided to forgo a career in software engineering to become a pastor.

Pastor Ed Jiang gave up a career in software engineering after studying at University of Pittsburgh’s nemesis school, Penn State. It would not have mattered whether Pastor Ed studied at Pitt or Penn State because a calling from the Lord is His calling and He will equip, enable, and empower His servants for works of service that bring Him honor and glory. That is what happened to Pastor Ed who became the Lord’s servant and was officially ordained as a pastor this past Sunday, March 09, 2008 at Pittsburgh Chinese Church-Oakland and Oakland International Fellowship’s joint service celebration.

Pastor Ed has been given that responsibility regardless of his young age, for our Lord does not look at our age but our faithfulness, availability, and teachability. Pastor Ed not only exemplifies those qualities but is also a wonderful counselor being trained by the Master Counselor, Jesus Christ Himself.

Happy blessed birthday Pastor Ed! My prayer and hope is that you will shepherd the flock gently and tenderly that the Lord Jesus has put in your care. May you also remember those who seek the ministry to shepherd God’s flock will be tempted much but when you pass the test of the temptations, you will see the rewards and blessings ahead!
