CONTENT
REVIEW:
“Live Free or Die Hard” is a technological terrorist thriller that can be watched over and over again. John McClane (played by the aging Bruce Willis) gives a stellar performance in this movie which addresses issues of terrorism, vengeance, death, sacrifice, community, and family. It is a must see movie and receives five stars. It is rated PG-13 for stylized violence and brief language.

PLOT SYNOPSIS:
“Live Free or Die Hard” is about a nation being held hostage by a disgruntled high-tech computer engineer who tries to destroy the infrastructure of everything run by computers for the sole purpose of making billions of dollars. The only problem is his team does not expect Detective McClane to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the help of a computer hacker who he protects, he goes after the bad guys to save the country and rescue his daughter.

Spiritual Commentary – SPOILER ALERT

Spoiler Alert I:

We see John Mclanes’ daughter Lucy McClane having a falling out with her dad to the point that she uses profanity at him in front of her friend. She did not even like using McClane as her last name! She wanted to go by her mother’s name Gennero.
It is a sad state of affairs when a people of a nation disrespect their parents and go as far as swearing at them.

This is totally contradictory to the Bible that commands us to honor our father and mother. Scripture does not say ‘Honor your father and mother only if…’! Yet, so many dishonor their parents by referring to them as ‘my old man’, or ‘calling them by their first name’, etc. Lucy called her dad by his first name and swore at him. This is wrong.

“Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you!” (Exodus 20:12, NIV)

Spoiler Alert II:
Even though his daughter Lucy treated him so badly and did not want to even talk to him, when she was in trouble her father sought after her to rescue her from the enemy. If an earthly father would go to so much length to rescue his own flesh and blood, imagine what the Lord does for His creation. McClane's actions reminded me of our Heavenly Father

No matter how badly people have treated God and have gone their own ways not wanting to have anything to do with the Heavenly Father, God has not abandoned them. On the contrary, for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to come rescue the world from the enemy. Jesus was sent to rescue us from the enemy. Even if we have rebelled against God, His love for us overshadows that. This does not mean there are not consequences for our actions but even through them the Lord is there to strengthen us and get us through.

“How great is the love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called His dear children.” (1 John 3:1, TLB)

Spoiler Alert III:
Eventually, Lucy goes by Lucy McClane after she is rescued by her dad who takes a bullet to his hand to rescue his daughter.

In the same way, when Jesus Christ has rescued prisoners from the prison of sin, they are freed and take the last name of Christians because of Christ. A Christian is someone who belongs to Christ and follows the teachings of Christ. There is so much significance to names.

"So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." (Acts 11:26b, NIV)

Questions to Ponder:
1. What is the issue with calling a parent/parents by their first name, swearing at them, etc and why do you think it is an issue?

2. What is the meaning of your name and why do you think people change their names? What examples can you think of from Scripture dealing with name changes and in what context did it happen?

3. Why do you think God loves us so much even if we have messed up and given Him so much pain? What is the evidence to show that God loves humanity?

4. What are issues in the movie that remind you of yourself?

5. Which character would you most likely relate to and why?
