While Ambassadors for Christ and Campus Crusade for Christ were having their weekly fellowship meetings to reach the souls of students with the Gospel of Jesus Christ on a blistery night of Thurs, Feb 08, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship postponed their meeting because one of their students was involved in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraiser put on by Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority!

Delta Phi Epsilon sorority decided to have their 5^th annual Deepher Dude competition in David Lawrence Hall at 9:00 p.m. to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that works to reach those affected by this debilitating disease.

Meaghan Maher, a Delta Phi Epsilon sister shared about Cystic Fibrosis before the competition began.

“Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects over 30,000 children. It causes the body to produce an abnormal amount of mucus which clogs the lungs causing Pneumonia. The treatment of the diseases depends on how severe the illness is. Usually it involves therapy where there is a rhythmic compression of your back that causes the mucus to loosen up.”, said Maher.

Maher also shared that 1 in 31 Americans is affected by the disease and children call it ‘Sixty Five Roses’ because the words are easier to pronounce. A vase of flowers was placed in front of the stage to remember all the children affected by Cystic Fibrosis.

Laura Powers, the philanthropy coordinators introduced the judges for the evening who were Jason Pippi, Deepher Dude 2006, Shady Henien, the president of Student Government Board, Chris Meaner, the Greek Life advisor, and Cheyenne Warriner, the representative from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The contestants were introduced by the Delta Phi Epsilon emcees for the night, Katie Venneri and Emily Calabrese.

The contestants who vied for the Deepher Dude 2007 title were Brian Zitelli of Delta Chi, Issac Goldzer of Zeta Beta Tau, Scott Goodwill of Glee Club, Alex Hersey of NCSC, Isaac Hill of Sigma Chi, Zach Miller of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Joe Normile of Phi Kappa Theta, Tim Patton of Tau Epsilon Phi, Loran Sekely of Emerging Leaders, and Mike Steimling of Phi Delta Theta.

Steimling was introduced with the statement, “the person he admires the most is Jesus Christ!”

The competition comprised of organization wear, talent segment, and Q & A. The acts were very diverse ranging from a performing band, to singing, to rapping, to juggling, and ribboning to an Olympic theme.

The top two contestants with the highest scores were Goldzer of Zeta Beta Tau, who rapped imitating cooking sounds as he demonstrated with pots and pans. The other contestant was Sekely of Emerging Leaders who rapped about his favorite food, ‘Refried Beans’.

The winner of Deepher Dude 2007 was announced after each contestant was escorted by their Deepher Beauties.

The judges chose Sekely of Emerging Leaders as Deepher Dude 2007. Sekely was so excited to win the title of Deepher Dude 2007.

According to Alicia Deluca, the president of Delta Phi Epsilon, more than $1,400 was raised to benefit the foundation.

“Cystic Fibrosis Foundations is one of the most efficient organizations in the country. Ninety percent of every dollar goes to the prevention and treatment of Cystic Fibrosis”, said Maher.
