Students should ask SGB regarding Pitt’s football season ticket hike!

It is not enough for the University of Pittsburgh to raise tuition each year but now with the help of Student Government Board (SGB), the athletic department decided to raise the price of Pitt football season tickets.

It used to be that you could get a student season ticket for only $20.00 until last year but now you have to pay more than double the price if you want to see all the home games.

Last season, the Panthers were ranked in the top 10 before the season started and had a home schedule including games against Notre Dame, Miami, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, among others. That was a caliber schedule and $20.00 was penny change to watch those games. If the total season ticket price was $45.00, it still would have been worth buying and would have made sense. Students could have been made to understand that those are big games and it is worth it.

To hike the student ticket price by 125% this year from $20.00 to $35.00 excluding $10.00 for the West Virginia game is just wrong. This should not have been the year to hike the price of the tickets.

There is no guarantee that students would have bought the season tickets for $20.00 this year after the weak home schedule except for Nebraska and West Virginia and because most of the top players we had graduated. Sadly, many fans are not loyal to come to games on a Saturday when they could be doing other things unless it is for big games.

Why would the athletic department who is giving credit also to the SGB make a mistake like this and raise the price in the wrong year. Raising prices unless they are for top games is not the way to fill the student section.

It is not known how SGB directly or indirectly contributed to the high ticket prices but you all have a right to know. The only thing I can think of was a forum it had last year with the athletic department.

As students, you need to approach your elected board members and ask them to give an account for their actions and their involvement in raising the ticket prices for student season tickets. They were elected to represent your needs and concerns and I don’t see how their involvement in a 125% hike of the student season ticket has done that for you. According to the athletic department, the SGB was involved in the decision.

What is it to say if this happened for football season tickets, it will not happen for basketball season tickets! It is bad enough all of you have to pay more and more in tuition each year without a price-freeze for the four to five years you expect to be here but now your sports entertainment will be emptying your pockets too.

To be fair to SGB, they have served the student body in many ways for which they were elected. Students need answers for this particular issue and hopefully SGB will give it to you.
