"The Golden Compass" (2007)

PLOT REVIEW:
'Golden Compass' is an action-packed movie about a girl named Lyra who is on a mission to save children who were abducted by the Magistrate who want to take their souls away which they call them daemons. Along the way, she is aided by a gypsies, an ice-bear, witches, and an aeronaut.

Content Review:
'Golden Compass' is filled with fight scenes and themes that are so totally contradictory to the Bible because the story line is based on a novel written by an athiest who has filled his novel series with anti-Christian messages. This movie addresses themes such as creation v.s evolution, fortune-telling & witchcraft, sin, prophesy, dust, drinking problems away, souls, free-will, authority, loyalty, and sacrifice,

What I did not like about the movie and the Bible verses give the reasons why too:

1. The movie emphasized parallel universes created by Dust and not by God our Creator.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2, NIV)

"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." (Genesis 1:31, NIV)

2. The movie emphasized fortune-telling to know about the future instead of looking to the Word of God for direction in life.

“Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft. (Leviticus 19:26b)

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NIV)

3. The movie emphasized disobedience to Scriptural authority and made it seem like it is ok to make our own future apart from God.

"He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26, NLT)

"Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." (Joshua 1:8, NLT)

4. The movie made the church look like the bad guys because they called whatever was going on heretical.

"Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead." (1 Timothy 4:1-2, NLT)

5. The movie made it seem like God is against us using our free-will and wants to subject us to His total control.

"But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15, NIV)

6. The movie emphasized that souls they called daemons actually walk beside you instead of a soul being within you created by God.

"For I will not fight against you forever;I will not always be angry.If I were, all people would pass away—all the souls I have made." (Isaiah 57:16, NLT)

Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose." (Luke 13:32, NLT)

7. The Word of God treats demons as evil but in the movie they walk beside you guiding your pathway! A daemon is supposed to be a demigod in mythology by being part-human and part-god which is also totally contradictory to Scripture.

What I liked about the movie:
1. Perseverance towards trials until the mission is accomplished.
2. Sacrifice to save the lives of hundreds of children.
3. Loyalty until the end even if it means death could occur.

Recommendation:
It is a movie worth watching to see how contradictory the messages of the movie is to God's Word so those that believe in God's Word can show the fallacies presented in the movie.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
1. Why do you think there are those out there that insist upon presenting a view other than Creation for how the world began contradicting Scripture?
2. Why do people want to know their future instead of depending upon their Creator & what about you?
3. What is the difference between dust in Scripture and dust in the movie?
4. What do you think the connection between the soul and sin is & what can you do about it according to Scripture which differentiates from what the movie teaches?
5. What do you believe the role of the soul is according to Scripture and how does the movie contradict that?
6. What does the Bible teach about free-will and what does the movie teach about God's children view on free will?
7. What are all the contradictory statements in the movie that go against the Word of God and are you able to counter those statements? Why or why not?
