"Bucket List" (2007)

Picture and source from the site http://www.imdb.com. The movie is rated PG-13 for language and a sexual reference!  Run time is 97  minutes!

New on DVD for June 10, 2008!

Maincast:
Jack Nicholson - Edward Cole
Morgan Freeman - Carter Chambers

WATCH TRAILER: Bucket List

RECOMMENDATION:
WATCH THE MOVIE !!!

PLOT SYNOPSIS:
'Bucket List' is about Edward Cole, a multi-millionaire and Carter Chambers, a car mechanic who find out that they have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. In the process, Cole
(played by Jack Nicholson) and Chambers (played by Morgan Freeman) decide to create a list of things they want to do before they die. The story revolves around all the things they do and enjoy with laughter making their life laudable even after they leave.

PLOT REVIEW:
''Bucket List' is a touching comedy-drama that has been well scripted for the most part emphasizing the importance of living life to the fullest! It's intent is to make sure we have joy and give joy to others before we leave this earth. It is a plot well worth seeing as it also emphasizes what goes on in a hospital of those suffering from terminal illnesses.

CONTENT REVIEW:
'Bucket List' is filled with bad language here & there with a sexual reference. It alludes to a sexual encounter on an airplane and in the bedroom. It also shows the dangers of smoking cigarettes. Overall it is a movie that addresses issues such as faith, life, death, joy, selflessness, selfishness, and sickness.

What I liked about the movie: (SPOILER ALERTS)

1. In the beginning of the movie, I liked the way Mr. Chambers poses the question of 'what is the measure of a person's life?'

This reminded me of the Bible verse from Ecclesiastes!

"That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad." (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, NLT)

2. I liked how one character's attitude towards sickness was from a positive view point compared to the other character's attitude towards sickness.

3. I liked the emphasis on the importance of family especially during sickness.

4. I liked how two different strangers come together to enjoy life after they find out that they are about to die.

5. I liked the emphasis on how beautiful the night sky looks and talk about faith.

This reminded me of verses from Psalm 8, Hebrews 11, and the Hymn 'How Great Thou Art'

"When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor." (Psalm 8:3-5, NLT)

"Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen." (Hebrews 11:1-3, NLT)

6. I liked the emphasis on praying together to the Lord Jesus as a family and the love shown within the family.

This reminded me of the Lord's prayer, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, and the passage on love.

"Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT)

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." (1 Corinthians 13:4-8b)

7. I liked the emphasis on 'Did you find joy in your life?' and 'Did you give joy to others?'

This reminded me of the Bible verses on joy and giving joy to others.

"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them." (John 17:13, NLT)

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13, NIV)

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV)

There are many other wonderful moments in the movie that I liked but want you to share with me what you liked under EXPRESS YOUR VIEW.

What I did not like about the movie: (SPOILER ALERT)

1. I did not like how Cole let money rule him at the expense of family life for many years until he found out that he was going to die.

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness." (1 Timothy 6:9-11, NIV)

2. I did not like the scene in the airplane and a scene in the bar making people think that it is okay to have sex outside of marriage.

"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1 Corinthians 6:18-20, NIV)

Questions to Ponder:

1. What did you like the most and least about 'Bucket List' and why?

2. How would you measure the sum of your life by and what are the things you would like to do before you die?

3. How do you know you have found joy in your life and have given joy to others in life?

4. What does family life and prayer life mean to you?

5. What do you want to be remembered for before leaving this earth?

6. What is the only thing worth being remembered for when you leave this earth?

7. If you were to die right now and God were to ask you why should He let you into Heaven what would your response be? What does the Bible say your response should be for entrance into Heaven?
